October Meeting: Relativity & election nominations

by William Murmann, CAA President

Tonight is our monthly CAA meeting Monday night (Oct. 10) — 7:30 PM at the Rocky River Nature Center. CAA member Bob Fritz will give a talk at 7:30 entitled “General Relativity: What It Is and Why It Matters.”

After Bob’s presentation and our break we will have our monthly business meeting and the first nominations for election to officer and member-at-large positions. Second nominations and the election will be held at our November 14 meeting.

Under our club bylaws, voting privileges start after six months of membership. Any member in good standing can run for a member-at-large position on the Board. Candidates for the office of president, vice president, secretary, and treasurer shall be limited to members who have been CAA members for at least two years, and who have attended at least half of the membership meetings during the preceding two years, or who are recommended by the Board.

The CAA Board consists of the four executive officers and the three members-at-large.

November 10: Meeting, Elections, and Program

The Cuyahoga Astronomical Association will hold its final general meeting and program for the year on Monday, November 10, 7:30 PM at the Rocky River Nature Center. In addition to regular club business, the biennial nomination and election of club officers and at-large board members will take place.

“Archaeo-astronomy” will be the topic of the evening’s astronomy presentation. Speaker Ed Alderman will describe how early man viewed the skies and measured the motions of the stars and planets.

Attendance by guests is welcome but participation in club business and elections is restricted to current members of the club.

It’s an election year for our club, too!

by William Murmann, CAA President

Every two years our club elects a new slate of executive officers and at-large board members, who serve for a two-year term. This is an election year for the upcoming 2013-2014 term of office.

Our Bylaws specify that nominations can start at our October meeting and that final nominations be made and the election held at our November meeting.

Here are the election and voting rules according to our Bylaws:

  • To have voting privileges, you must be a paid-up member at least 18 years of age, or be an Honorary Life Member or a Patron Member.
  • Persons under the age of 18 cannot be elected to office or be named to chair committees.
  • For new members, voting privileges start after six (6) months of membership.

Candidates for executive office — the president, vice-president, secretary, and treasurer — must have been CAA members for at least two (2) years, and have attended at least half of the membership meetings during the preceding two years, or be recommended by the Board.
